National World War II Memorial
17th St. & Independence Ave. NW
wwiimemorial.com
Located between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial, this
memorial honors the 16 million who served during WWII and those who
supported the war effort at home.
The
WWII Memorial features two 43-foot arches symbolizing the Pacific and
European theaters, a 17-foot pillar for each state and territory from
that period and a field of 4,000 gold stars honoring the more than
400,000 Americans who gave their lives.
The
center of this memorial is a fountain with the pillars surrounding it.
A series of bronze sculpture panels depict Americans at war, at home,
and overseas. Additionally, famous quotes (such as the one above)
are carved into the walls surrounding the pillars. Each bronze
panel is a raised, sculptured image, most based on historical photos.
Created by sculptor Ray Kaskey, the panels represent the country's
transformation into the war after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
