The Seattle
Waterfront

The Seattle Waterfront is in view
from almost any point in the city. With the downtown buildings
perched on hills overlooking the water, as you walk the streets, you
will constantly catch glimpses of the waters of Elliott Bay and Puget
Sound. The Seattle Waterfront was reminiscent of the Fisherman's Wharf area of San Francisco. The vast waterfront deck area is
adorned with neon signs and a myriad of seafood restaurants, fish and
chips counters, ice cream stands, and curio stores.
The impressive
glass buildings of the Seattle skyline form a backdrop to this
waterfront district. The southern end of the waterfront is the
industrial district. This is where the commercial harbor is
located, with the gigantic rows of
shipping
containers, towering cranes and moored shipping vessels. The
professional sports arenas Safeco Field and Qwest Field are located at
the edge of this district.
Talk a walk down to the waterfront, on the way there
stop by the famous Pike Place Market, known for the throwing of the
fish. Pike Place is located just one block off of the water.
Directly below Pike Place is the Seattle Aquarium, located just north of
Pier 57.
The
Royal Argosy Cruises are located at Pier 56, offering public and private
tours of the harbor, the locks, Tillicum Village, Lake Union and Lake
Washington, and more. Check out
available cruises.
We
took a walk down to the waterfront in the early morning, around 7:00AM.
This early all the stores and restaurants were still closed, and the
area is beautifully quiet and tranquil. The water was still and
the sky still grey with a slight overcast, not yet
burned
off by the early sun. You could still see the early morning
ferries traveling to and from the ferry station near pier 48. This
early, you could still hear the sounds of the sea gulls and pigeons, and
the splashing of the waves onto the pier and seawall.
